Job Overview

Shriners Children's Chicago is looking for a full-time Medical Technologists for our Clinical Lab Department.  Join a team of professionals committed to improving children's lives.  Our top healthcare professionals excel in their practices and provide compassionate, family-centered care to children who need it most.  

Responsibilities

  • The Medical Technologist accurately performs and evaluates technical procedures utilizing accepted quality control techniques with the aid of automated, semi-automated and/or manual methodologies.
  • Diagnostic procedures are performed in chemistry, microbiology, hemostasis, hematology, blood banking, urinalysis and venipuncture as needed.
  • Performs phlebotomy on patients/employees as needed. Follows proper procedure for preparing patient, verifying identity of patient, obtaining specimen, correctly filling out requisition.
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and documents corrective action on QC failures.
  • Performs daily, monthly, and as needed maintenance on equipment and documents accordingly.
  • Is knowledgeable on correct procedure for specimen collection/rejection.
  • Performs calibration of equipment as required. Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Reports test results in a timely manner per policy/procedure.
  • Reports results for stats, abnormals, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
  • Ensures test requisitions are filled out correctly.
  • Is proficient in hematology, hemostasis, urinalysis, microbiology, chemistry, serology and blood banking.
  • Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents and patient specimens when problems occur.  Notifies Manager if unable to resolve the issue. Documents action taken.
  • Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department team, inter and intra-departmentally, to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Maintains work area - cleans bench, restocks supplies, notifies manager of low inventory.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or a related field of laboratory science (biological, chemical or
    physical) from an accredited college or university.
  • MT (ASCP) or equivalent

 

Preferred:

  • One to two years related experience and/or training in a general clinical laboratory setting preferred.
