Job Overview

Shriners Children's is the premier pediatric burn, orthopaedic, spinal cord injury, cleft lip and palate, and pediatric subspecialties medical center.  We have an opportunity for a full time Child Life Specialist. 

Responsibilities

The Child Life Specialist provides psychosocial support, therapeutic recreational and diversion activities as well as emotional support for patients. The Specialist works with families to promote family-centered care as well as offers support and education to patients and their families. The Specialist assists patient and family in coping skills to reduce anxiety.

 


Patient Care-Evaluation
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assess the patient accounting for diagnosis, medical history and psychosocial history.
• Demonstrates clinical judgment based on data gathered to set goals/plans of care for infants, toddlers, preschool, school-age, adolescents and young adults as determined by medical orders.

 


Plan of Care - Treatment
• Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability necessary to provide therapeutic interventions designed to address the psychosocial and emotional needs of the patients and their families, including but not limited to, developmentally appropriate therapeutic play interventions, pre-admission tours, procedure accompaniments/preparations and diversional recreational activities.
• Assists patient and families in maintaining a healthy attitude toward the diagnosis and hospital experience.
• Communicates a clear and logical rationale for intervention process.
• Utilizes evidence from published research and relevant resources to make informed intervention decisions.
• Communicates effectively with medical staff regarding plans of care.
• provides patient/family education at age appropriate level of understanding.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field required

 

Certification/Licensure

Certified Child Life Specialist

 

Experience

One year’s experience in a child life program
