Job Overview

Shriners Children's is the premier pediatric burn, orthopaedic, spinal cord injury, cleft lip and palate, and pediatric subspecialties medical center.  We have an opportunity for a Corporate Director of Building & Construction reporting into our Corporate Headquarters location.

 

The Corporate Director, Buildings & Construction reports to the Senior Corporate Director, Buildings and Construction. Responsibilities include the management and control of new construction projects, renovation projects and hospital facility upgrades. Director provides oversight and coordination of all project meetings, bidding, permitting and construction activities related to projects assigned. Develops RFP's and RFQ's for procurement of professional services, contractors, consultants and vendors. Analyzes proposals and makes recommendations to the Vice President, Hospital Operations and the Buildings and Equipment Committee (B&E Committee). Reviews all project related payment applications for accuracy and processing. Assists the Supply Chain and Legal departments with vendor agreements, purchase orders, and contact development.

 

The Director follows-up and coordinates facility maintenance concerns, warranty issues, regulatory assessments and capital review issues that may arise at assigned hospital and provides recommendations to B&E Committee and Joint Boards. The Director works collaboratively with all departments across the entire system, both corporately and on an individual hospital basis, to ensure standards are met. Also assists in facilitating improvements to capital projects involving construction or utilities, hospital maintenance programs, effecting operational cost savings, and developing maintenance and plant operation standards for use in each hospital.

 

 

The Corporate Director of Building & Construction will provide recommendations, status reports regarding projects, budgets & variance reports, and department presentations for the Joint Boards, Buildings & Equipment Committee and Vice President, Hospital Operations.

 

This position requires frequent regional, national and international travel, as well as being fully bilingual English/Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares Request for Proposal (RFP) and Request for Qualification (RFQ) documents to solicit proposals from design consultants, construction contractors, consultants and vendors. Analyzes proposals, makes recommendations and supervises the work of those retained.
  • Completes various administrative tasks including budgeting, cost tracking, cash flow projections. Manages administrative personnel.
  • Develops standards of preferred equipment and finishes in various hospital departments (chillers, boilers, hot water heaters, flooring, carpeting, etc.). This includes products that have not worked well in previous installations.
  • Develops and suggests new maintenance and operation practices to improve efficiency and affect cost savings. Such practices may include energy saving studies, annual maintenance inspections and standard preventative maintenance software and conducting surveys to determine the best products to use at new facilities.
  • Directs feasibility and cost studies per the direction of the Chairman, Buildings & Equipment Committee and Vice President, Hospital Operations to define scope of work and cost potential of hospital renovation or new construction projects.
  • Manages and controls multiple complex and diverse renovation and construction projects
  • Reviews all requests for building related capital equipment. Assures that requested equipment meets or exceeds life safety codes, ensures infrastructure can meet the demand requirements for utilities and other construction that may be required for installation.
  • Works collaboratively with General Counsel, Materials Management, Finance and other functional areas as required to expedite facility management requirements.
  • Keeps current on industry trends, Joint Commission standards and other regulatory requirements and best practices to provide guidance and recommendations for improvement.
  • Works collaboratively with individual hospital facility leadership to ensure functional programming, design and equipment selections to meet the strategic goals of the system. Assists in regulatory preparedness as required by each facility.

Qualifications

Experience Required:

  • 10 yrs of maintenance and construction experience within a hospital setting required
  • Experience reading and understanding blueprints required
  • Experience reviewing and understanding contract language required
  • Experience reviewing and understanding Shop drawings and submittals required
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field required

 

Experience Preferred:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Professional licensure and/or Certification preferred
  • Master's Degree in related field preferred
  • Contractor's license or equivalent preferred
