Shriners Children's is the premier pediatric burn, orthopaedic, spinal cord injury, cleft lip and palate, and pediatric subspecialties medical center.  We have an opportunity for an on-call Sr. Pharmacy Technician to join our Pharmacy team.

 

Job Summary

Shriners Children's – Portland has a great opportunity for an on-call Sr. Pharmacy Technician to join our team! The Senior Pharmacy Technician is responsible for promoting and preparing the appropriate, safe, secure and effective distribution and inventory of all pharmaceutical products for the optimal care of pediatric patients. 

Responsibilities

Technology
• Perform key computer related skills including use of the EMR, common word processing, spreadsheet, medical literature and medication databases.
• Utilizes technology appropriately, such as Omnicell/Omnicenter, MILT/Medidose, PharmacyKeeper, PharmacyStars, CADD Solis pump programing, or Alaris (limited use).
 
Coordination with team members
• Regularly assists other pharmacists as time allows and as requested.
• Maintains strong rapport with health care practitioners.
• Enhances workflow through effective, open and respectful communication.
• Establishes and maintains open communication channels.
Demonstrates good listening skills.
 
Department Coordination
• Demonstrates ability to perform tasks necessary to provide a smooth operation within the Pharmacy Department.
• Answers telephone, performs general filing, handles mail, and performs duties as assigned
• Shows willingness to take on additional duties when assigned.
 
Regulatory Compliance
• Follows all regulatory rules and regulations regarding medications, including controlled substances
• Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to federal and Oregon State Board of Pharmacy regulations
• Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to DEA, state, and federal guidelines and Shriners Hospital policy regarding controlled substances
• Maintains accurate inventory and records for all controlled substances as required by law.
 
Purchasing and Billing
•Purchases/orders medications and supplies in coordination with pharmacist when needed
•Processes billing transactions for medications used in surgery
•Maintains stock and PARs to ensure medication is ordered in timely manner.
•Communicates with team purchasing activity, including items on order (if not next day), shortages, delays, or any other concerns
•Maintains annual budget, being mindful of cost and availability of medications
 
Sterile Compounding and USP 797
• Performs aseptic technique within the clean room suite, following all guidance in USP 797, USP 800, and internal policy.
• Cleans the IV suite according to policy and procedures
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of USP 797 and USP 800
• Performs annual and biannual competencies, such as didactic examinations and practical examinations including media fill and fingertip testing.
• Completes and documents activities within PharmacyStars on time
 
Medication preparation and dispensing
• Ensures quality pharmaceutical care by accurate and efficient distributive services.
• Performs DUR for all medication orders prior to verification.
• Ensures medications needed for care are available for nursing staff in timely manner, which may include utilization of ADC or delivery to nursing unit as needed.
• Responds to changes in work load as necessary. Uses time in productive manner-assists technicians & other pharmacists, restocks, cleans, orders, organizes, special projects, etc.
• Prepares and delivers intravenous and epidural pain management drugs. Demonstrates skills to program PCA pumps. Assists nursing staff with the safe administration of pain management medications.
 
Medication Preparation and Dispensing
• Ensures quality pharmaceutical care by accurate and efficient distributive services.
• Ensures medications needed for care are available for nursing staff in timely manner, which may include utilization of ADC (Omnicell) or delivery to nursing unit as needed.
• Responds to changes in workload as necessary. Uses time in productive manner assisting pharmacists, restocks, cleans, orders, organizes, special projects, etc.
 
Facilities
• Performs outdates on all stock in pharmacy and all medication stock outside of pharmacy (i.e. Omnicell in medication rooms)
• Assures that all pharmaceuticals are purchased, stored, controlled, and dispensed in a safe, effective manner which meets all regulatory requirements.
• Maintains clean, safe and orderly environment.
• Documents activities within PharmacyStars in timely manner, including daily temperature.

Qualifications

  • 2 years Pharmacy Technican expereince in a hospital setting required
  • Pharmacy Technician license in Oregon required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association required
  • Trained and experienced in the preparation of sterile products
