The cast technician is responsible for assisting the providers and staff with application, maintenance and removal of casts, and other splint and devices as ordered. The cast technician provides instruction to patients and families on how to properly care for the cast. Assists providers and other members of the healthcare team coordinating examinations, treatment and healthcare planning for patients/families.
Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an Orthopedic Thechnician and the Outpatient Clinic (OPC) standard of care.
Evaluates patients scheduled in the cast clinic. Notes condition of the cast prior to removal and upon removal of cast. inspects the skin for signs of infection, redness or breakdown. Reports observations to the Charge Nurse or Provider.
Under direction of the Provider, provides cast and skin care education to patients/families. Participates in reviewing the content of patient informational handouts and ensures that parents/familes understand to expect during procedures.
Assists other team members with rooming patients. Evaluates workload of staff within cast clinic and with Charge Nurse approval assigns addditional tasks during down time. Participates in other duties as assigned.
Demonstrates compentency in the application, removal, maintenance, modifications of cast, splints and traction. Assists in applying, trimming, bivalve, univalve, of cast and splints in the cast clinic.
Sets up and appropriately stores supplies and equipment at the beginning and end of each clinic. Ensures that traction setups are correct and safe prior to the beginning of casting procedures.
Medical Assistant Certificate preferred
One year of related work experience
