It is the world’s leading center for pediatric burn care and is the only American Burn Association (ABA) exclusively pediatric verified burn center in New England and New York.

Job Overview

The Child Life Specialist provides comprehensive, purposeful, developmentally appropriate, and culturally sensitive, family-centered care. This care is focused on meeting the psychosocial and developmental needs of children and families.  Schedule is 7:30am to 4pm M/T/TH/F.  Flexibility to work occasional Wednesdays and weekends is strongly preferred.  

Responsibilities

  • Provides evaluation and therapeutic services, direct patient care and patient/family education, in an efficient manner.
  • Services may include therapeutic play, preparation, procedural support, special events, and reintegration programming. The child life specialist utilizes these practices in an effort to
    facilitate adaptive coping techniques and promote normal growth and development of the patient and family.
  • Functions as a team member and develops leadership through activities such as mentoring and providing education to students and other
    professionals.
  • Supports the ongoing development and improvement of the department through participation in special projects, performance improvement and facility
    committees.
  • In cooperation with other local leaders, offers exceptional care following the Shriners Children's FOCUSED©™ program, a system-wide model for professional practice that stresses and emphasizes patient –centered care, or always putting the needs of the patients (and their families) first.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field
  • Certified Child Life Specialist

Preferred:

  • Masters degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field 
  • One year’s experience in a hospital child life program
