Job Overview

The Health Unit Coordinator manages the communication center of the inpatient nursing units, communicating courteously, effectively, and efficiently with all customers.  Completes clinical information system and patient record responsibilities including admission, discharge, and transfers, patient registration, obtaining and updating insurance information; ensures that records are complete and accurate to allow for patient billing.  Ensures nursing staff is aware of patient needs communicated to the HUC through the nurse call system.  Notifies appropriate staff during emergency situations, acute admissions, and discharges.  Provides assistance as needed to the nursing staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Assists families to become oriented to the hospital.
  • Answers families' questions promptly and seeks further information as needed for the family. 
  • Clearly and efficiently communicates all patient care information to the appropriate team member.
  • Monitors all charts continuously for new orders and transcribes physician orders in a timely manner.
  • Reviews pre-op charts to ensure completion by appropriate staff prior to surgery.
  • Completes all paperwork for admissions and discharges according to policy and procedure

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma / GED required

 

Certification/Licensure

BLS certification required

Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) certification preferred

 

Experience

Experience in a healthcare setting and medical terminology strongly desired

Previous HUC experience preferred
