Job Overview

The Chief Medical Officer is the senior physician executive responsible for providing leadership for the quality, timeliness, and efficacy of clinical care delivery by physician and non-physician providers within the SHC hospitals and affiliated facilities. This position will have responsibility for overseeing the clinical and academic functions across the full SHC hospital enterprise and collaborating with the Vice President, Research Programs on research endeavors and strategies. This role will coordinate with the SHC Chief Physician Executive, Physician Enterprise, to assure maintenance of quality across the inpatient- outpatient continuum. This position will report directly to the Executive Vice President (EVP) of SHC and will have ultimate reporting responsibility to the SHC Board of Directors and Board of Trustees.

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Chiefs of Staff to insure timely staffing of qualified clinical personnel and consistent delivery of quality clinical care across the hospital enterprise
  • Oversee the management of the medical staff services including hospital credentialing, policies and procedures, corrective actions, appraisal of the quality of the professional care delivered, availability and timeliness of appointments, and other management processes required to support the SHC mission
  • Lead the development of clinical processes, standards for care delivery including consultations, quality metrics, clinical dashboards, and outcomes objectives that meet and exceed standards for care delivery, regulatory compliance, payer contracting and consumer expectations
  • Chair the Peer Review Committee (or equivalent) and implement appropriate peer review policies and procedures and remedial actions for improvement where needed
  • Lead the implementation, maintenance and refinement of quality improvement, utilization management and “lean” process improvement programs
  • Collaborate with the EVP in the development and implementation of internal physician and non-physician continuing medical education programs and standards
  • Assure that physician staff fulfills requisite CME requirements for licensure and maintenance of specialty/subspecialty certification
  • Assure that all physicians practicing within the SHC hospitals are fully credentialed and maintain such credentialing in the go forward
  • Assure that clinical and bench research activities accrue to the benefit of the SHC mission, clinical care delivery and brand through collaboration with the Vice President, Research Programs
  • Assure that educational and teaching activities meet and exceed standards for educational excellence for learners of all types including medical students, residents, fellows, nursing and other healthcare delivery personnel
  • Actively participate in vital executive management responsibilities including strategic planning, general and capital budgeting development, personnel/staffing recommendations, equipment and other required resources

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD with board certification and active practice in a pediatric surgical specialty
  • Meets all requirements for clinical practice within at least one SHC hospital facility
  • Formal business or management training; MBA preferred
  • 5+ years of medical practice experience
  • 5+ years of medical informatics, or academic training in medical informatics
  • 5+ years previous administrative experience in leading complex healthcare organizations to clinical, academic and research success
