Job Overview

Shriners Children’s Northern California is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner – to join our dedicated, mission-driven team. This is a unique opportunity for a versatile and collaborative provider to serve as a “utility player” across our growing orthopedic and specialty programs, including chest wall, spina bifida, urology, neuromuscular, and inpatient orthopedic care.

 

The APP will provide comprehensive support in both outpatient and inpatient settings, focusing on pre- and post-surgical care, care coordination, patient and family education, and multidisciplinary team collaboration. The ideal candidate is adaptable, eager to learn, and comfortable working across different clinical environments as program needs evolve.

 

This position entails a 1.0 FTE commitment with a Monday through Friday schedule. There are no nights, weekends, holidays, or call requirements. This is a salaried, exempt, full-benefits eligible position. The pay range for this position is $162,936-$230,028, determined based on years of clinical experience and departmental equity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform age-appropriate health assessments, physical exams, and develop comprehensive care plans in collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Manage pre- and post-operative care for pediatric patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests; prescribe medications and treatments within licensure and Shriners Children’s protocols.
  • Provide inpatient care including admissions, daily rounds, patient management, and discharge planning.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics and care conferences to ensure coordinated, family-centered care.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff on treatment plans, procedures, and home care.
  • Document all care in the electronic health record and contribute to quality, safety, and improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with case management, nursing, therapy services, and social work to coordinate high-quality care.
  • Respond to urgent/emergent patient needs per hospital protocols.

Qualifications

Education

If Physician Assistant:

  • Master of Physician Assistant Studies (or equivalent degree) from an accredited Physician Assistant program

 

If Nurse Practitioner:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program

 

Experience

  • 2+ years of clinical experience in a pediatric or pediatric specialty setting preferred (outpatient or inpatient).
  • Experience with pediatric orthopedic, neuromuscular, urology, or chest wall/spina bifida patient populations preferred.

 

Certification and Licensures


If Physician Assistant:

  • Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in the state of practice
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

 

If Nurse Practitioner:

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice
  • ANCC, AANP, or equivalent board certification in an applicable specialty (Pediatric NP-AC, Pediatric NP-PC, or Family NP).

 

Both:

  • Must possess eligibility for active DEA
  • Must possess BLS for Healthcare Providers and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications
  • Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws

 

Additional Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong pediatric assessment and clinical decision-making skills
  • Familiarity with pediatric specialty protocols, pre- and post-surgical care, and inpatient care practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary care teams
  • Proficient in EHR systems (Epic) and clinical documentation
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, family-centered care, and trauma-informed practice
