Job Overview

Reporting to the Vice President of Research Programs, the Chief Research Innovation Officer (CRIO) drives strategic innovation and transformation within the Shriners Children’s (SC) clinical research programs. The CRIO is responsible for developing and implementing strategy for innovation, fostering a culture of innovation, and overseeing the implementation of new technologies and processes to improve patient care and quality of life. The CRIO will work with the Director of the Shriners Children’s Research Institute (SCRI) to build cross-functional teams, foster cross-institutional collaboration, and integrate innovation across all areas of research to promote growth and competitive advantage. The CRIO will actively engage SC medical and scientific staff to achieve system-wide integration of the SC clinical research and biomedical engineering initiatives. The goal is to position Shriners Children’s as the world leader in medical understanding and care of children in all SC clinical service lines. The CRIO will hold a 0.5 FTE joint appointment in the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Pediatric Innovation Network (GT-PIN).

Responsibilities

  • Visit Shriners Children’s sites to ensure engagement and inclusion of clinicians/surgeons, both nationally and internationally
  • Connect clinicians with researchers to develop novel solutions and understanding
  • Work with the Atlanta innovation ecosystem and partner organizations
  • Work with the national and international medical device and patient engagement ecosystems
  • Scout existing/startup companies for promising technologies and to make sure we are not re-inventing existing technologies
  • Assist in coordinating Subject Matter Expert (SME) reviewers for proposal and research efforts, including those from academic, industry, and innovation.
  • Guide developers through early stages of translation/commercialization
  • Predict what products and technologies will look like in the future
  • Work with the SCRI Director to develop Innovation Strategies
  • Recommend innovation strategies to VP of Research

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate degree (PhD, MS, ME or equivalent) in a biomedical, scientific, or engineering field (Required)
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership in clinical research, translational science, or academic/industry collaboration.
  • Experience leading multi-institutional, interdisciplinary research teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of pediatric innovation frameworks and well connected with or have in-depth knowledge of clinical trials infrastructure and regulatory requirements.
  • High proficiency in strategic planning, relationship building, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Well-connected in the Atlanta healthcare innovation ecosystem and with local academic institutions.
