Job Overview

Shriners Children’s is seeking a part-time Night Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our growing inpatient and PICU team at Shriners Children’s Texas. This provider will provide critical overnight coverage for all inpatient and PICU service lines, including Burn, Orthopedics, Spine, and Cleft Lip & Palate.

 

The Night Nurse Practitioner serves as the primary in-house overnight advanced practice provider (8 pm–6 am), managing patient needs, performing urgent assessments and overnight admissions, and supporting night nursing teams. The NP ensures seamless hand-offs to daytime teams and practices with autonomy under established protocols, with Intensivist physicians available for escalation.

 

This 0.5 FTE role consists of two 10-hour overnight shifts per week, including rotating weekend coverage (Fri–Sat or Sat–Sun). The NP covers the entire inpatient and PICU census overnight, averaging 10 patients (range 5–14).

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous overnight clinical management for inpatient and PICU patients across all service lines

  • Perform urgent assessments, overnight admissions, and care escalation as needed

  • Execute core PICU bedside procedures and wound/dressing care based on privileges

  • Assist with sedation when required

  • Serve as the primary in-house clinician overnight, utilizing autonomy under protocols

  • Support transitions of care through high-quality hand-offs to day teams

  • Document overnight events that inform daily multidisciplinary rounds

Qualifications

Education

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program

Experience

 

  • Prior pediatric inpatient or PICU APRN experience or strong PICU nursing background
  • Experience with burn or surgical patient populations
  • Ability to work independently overnight with strong communication and critical-thinking skills

Certification and Licensures

  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or equivalent board certification in applicable specialty area, such as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC, CPNP-PC) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). CPNP-AC certification strongly preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice
  • Must possess eligibility for active DEA
  • Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification may be required based on clinical assignment
  • Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
